What is an Intimacy Coordinator?
An Intimacy Coordinator is the figure in the film and TV industry that creates a safe working environment for actors during intimate scenes, while helping the director realize their creative vision. Some of the responsibilities of the Intimacy Coordinator are:
—To facilitate dialogue between actors and directors around levels of comfort on intimate scenes.
–Create clear communication around boundaries and consent between the actors.
–Ensure that closed set protocols and SAG-AFTRA intimacy guidelines are followed.
–Serve as an on-set advocate and ally for LGBTQIA+ cast members.
–If requested by the director, choreograph and coach movement to enhance intimate scenes.
What are the benefits of an Intimacy Coordinator in production?
Intimate content can potentially put the actor in a vulnerable place, due to the high physical and emotional exposure. The Intimacy Coordinator protects and advocates for the actor’s well being during the whole production.
The Intimacy Coordinator also interrupts the dynamic of power between performers and director, making sure that the actor can be heard, respected, and has received all information regarding the intimate scene before giving their full consent.
In safe work conditions, the actors can bring their best performance.
The Intimacy Coordinator supports the director as well caring for the needs of the scene.
The presence of the IC on production sets a professional tone to the entire crew.
IC makes filming more efficient, and reduces the risks of harassment and potentially lawsuits.
Approach
Bringing the known to the unknown
My work in a project starts in prep, where I meet with the director for an interview and find out their vision of the intimate scenes. Then I will meet with each performer separately to inform them about all details related to the scenes and the director's vision, so that they are informed and able to grant a conscious consent, and if needed, help them to set a healthy boundary. I will also coordinate with the different departments the needs of the scenes such as modesty garments, barriers, prosthetics, closed sets.
I do not interfere with the director's creative process and their relationship with the actor, unless I have been invited to join the conversation.
I make myself available and present for the actor on set in moments when feelings of vulnerability might be triggered.
And I prepare and take care of myself so that I can be a support to others.
